What Do You Find?

Nova Scotia Dinosaurs and Other Fossils CD

The fishing boats docked at the wharf on Big Tancook Island. This is one of the first views you see as you embark from the ferry, which connects the island with the mainland at Chester, an hour ferry trip away. As you leave the wharf look toward the northeast and walk onto the beach. This beach is where a large number of fossils have been discovered. We walked the beach at low tide and found a number of fossils in a matter of minutes. One of many shells found on the beach. The dime provides and indication of the size of this particular shell.
The beach contains many samples of corals and it is easily found as you walk along the shore.

The coral fossil on the left was found by Martha Farrar, who lives on Big Tancook Her large collection of fossils is on display at the General Store on the island.

The fossil on the right has yet to be identified. If you are can identify this fossil please let me know and I will pass the information on to Mrs. Farrar.
